Michelle Walmsley, a Port Credit Secondary School graduate, will be among a number of up-and-coming Canadian designers in the spotlight at the inaugural Fashion Fore Hope charity gala. The event is being hosted by Toronto designer Sheila Jobin. Walmsley, 35, who studied Art and Art History at the University of Toronto Mississauga campus and received a Fashion Techniques diploma from George Brown College in Toronto, says she's looking forward to showcasing a part of the swim and resort wear clothing line that she's launching in full next spring. "It's a great opportunity to present my design to an audience and I really like involving myself in charity shows, " she said, adding that she also participated in charity shows while she was working for a British knitwear label in London, England. "It's a great cause and it's a no brainer for me to be involved. " Walmsley says her ultimate goal is to create both ready-to-wear and custom-fit quality garments through her own ethical fashion brand, staying true to her beliefs that "as a designer you can influence the industry and bring about positive change. " She's buying all the fabrics in Canada and moving away from synthetics by using organic cotton and natural products. Walmsley adds she's also manufacturing her line here. Proceeds from the golf tournament will support the Yonge Street Mission, a non-profit organization that aids people living in poverty in Toronto; The Native Women's Centre in Hamilton, an emergency shelter; Dans La Rue, which helps youth on the streets in Montreal; and Interval House, a women's shelter in Bracebridge that serves the Muskoka area.
